Popstar Taylor Swift has gained a plethora of recognition during her music career, having created over 200 songs. She has been producing music for over a decade, trending online and influencing her massive audience known as “Swifties.” Taylor was named TIME’s Person of the Year in 2023, won best album at the 2023 Grammys, and her most recent album was atop the Billboard 200. Despite her large quantity of supporters, fans, and recognition, her music is derivative, mediocre, and unoriginal.
On her most recent Eras Tour, the internet was infected by fans in wigs, costumes, and makeup impersonating their idol, posting their experiences at her concerts. This caused online disputes and altercations, as individuals who opposed her content publicly expressed that they severely disliked her music, and the people who listen to it. Senior at La Jolla High, Heidi Weise, was asked why she disliked Taylor Swift. She stated, “Her music is repetitive and every song is exactly the same.” Additionally, La Jolla High Junior Haiden Uhrig was asked how he felt about Taylor Swift’s popularity. He replied “Her songs are catchy, but they all have the same premise. Also, her fanbase is obscenely annoying.”
Taylor Swift and her music production is a common debate in conversations among friends, family, peers, and even internet quarrels. Her hype is undeserved and her “preppy” style and fanbase is overwhelming and too extreme. Taylor had her time to shine, and now the attention needs to move on to the next generation of artists.
