Softball Off to a Slow Start

Varsity Softball is one of the many spring sports at La Jolla High School. Despite a season with mostly losses, these Vikings show their resilience and optimism for the future. The team is coached by Anthony Serran, with team captains Caitlin Murphy and Roxy Metcalf also showcasing their leadership. So far, they have played around fifteen games, and their season goes until May. Besides games, they also attend tournaments, which only some LJHS teams are able to attend. In fact, one of their best games happened at a tournament. They were playing Vista, who proved to be the perfect amount of competition for the game to be exciting. However, Vista ended up winning by two points, but as sophomore outfielder Savannah Putnam states, “We would have won if we had more time…we were playing with tournament time”. Tournament time means fewer innings and fewer opportunities for runs or points.

These softball players show that despite their losses, they still work hard and enjoy playing together as a team. Putnam says, “This season has obviously not been the best, but I think that we’ve learned a lot.” Maddie Ehlert, another sophomore on the team, optimistically adds, “We’ll be better next year.” There is still plenty of time for the team to get some wins, and the rest of the season will surely see a lot of positive and exciting moments. For now, Putnam and Ehlert would like to shout out their captains, “they are amazing and do an amazing job leading us.”
