Clubs are Essential to the High School Experience

Many people look back at their high school years with fond memories and nostalgia. This is because the high school experience is unique in that students get a break from all the rules in middle school, a taste of freedom, and an introduction to what their future in college will be like. A few aspects of high school that are considered essential to the high school experience by the majority of students are attending school events, making friends, and joining a sports team.

Some may argue that clubs are insignificant to one’s journey through high school, as many students go through high school without participating in a single club. However, this outlook couldn’t be further from the truth, as being part of school clubs is a fundamental aspect of the high school experience.

Participating in school clubs offers plenty of opportunities for students to make new friends and be more involved in La Jolla’s community. Senior Chris Ruff, a member of the Food Bank Club, comments, “I am glad I can be part of something big in La Jolla; every month, we volunteer for an hour at the food bank.” Apart from being involved in the community, members of the Food Bank Club can earn volunteer hours as they help in the food bank.

Additionally, as college admissions become increasingly competitive each year, students are scrambling to find more and more extracurricular activities to make their applications stand out. School clubs are a great way to strengthen one’s application as it demonstrates community involvement.

Fortunately for students, La Jolla High School offers a wide variety of clubs that range from volunteer opportunities to sports clubs, so a club exists for everyone. And, if it doesn’t, forming one’s own club is always an option.
