Met Gala 2021

Every year, the Met Gala grabs their audience’s attention with extravagant themes. This year the theme was “Americano,” also known as the American pride or spirit. Celebrities’ outfits are intended to catch the viewer’s eye. Vogue said that the purpose for this event is to fundraise money for new exhibits at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute. Due to COVID-19 regulations, this year’s attendance list was much smaller than previous years.

According to Vogue, the honorary chairs this year were Tom Ford, Adam Mosseri, and Anna Wintour. The co-chairs, also known as the hosts, were Timothée Chalamet, Billie Eilish, Amanda Gorman, and Naomi Osaka. Even the hosts of this year had the definition of extravagant outfits to interview other celebrities in. The American theme encourages all to show pride within their designer outfits to show the change that has gone on during the pandemic.

With the fashion being an idle part of why others tend to watch this event, it is important for the guest to match the theme. Senior Basanti Valerie said,

“The theme was overall too generic, it shouldn’t have been so broad of an idea.”

The general theme being left for a lot of expansion on the concepts of what was an appropriate outfit that would not be too outside the Americano vision. Celebrities took advantage of this general theme to really think outside the box. Junior Justin Graff said, “The outfits matched the simple theme quite well.” The Met Gala was definitely not forgotten after this hectic year and everyone can only look forward to the next.
