Youtube Rewind

On December 5th, 2019, Youtube Rewind launched for the tenth consecutive year in a row. According to Business Insider, Youtube’s budget was lower than usual this year because of the backlash from the 2018 Youtube Rewind video, which had gained a total of 17 million dislikes. The feedback this year has not been too promising for YouTube either, with Twitter and Facebook users calling it “lazy and boring.”

Freshman Manoah Abate said, “It looked low budget and the makeup portion of the video was irrelevant along with fortnite because nobody watches those videos.” Similarly, Sophomore Stella Chopskie said, “The video was boring and does not connect to the fans’ desires. Youtube has great content, however, I think they should discontinue Youtube Rewind because the past couple of years it has been pretty cringy.”

At the same time, some seemed to enjoy YouTube’s recap of 2019. In contrast to popular opinion, Sophomore Dante Babic said, “The Youtube Recab this year was impressive compared to last year’s disaster. I enjoyed the streamer segment personally, because that reflected the type of videos I watch. Also, it’s cool that they had a compilation for different types of youtube channels so that it was not restricted to only video games, for example.”

This year’s video opened with the words, “In 2018, we made something you didn’t like. So in 2019, let’s see what you DID like. Because you’re better at this than we are.” Though Youtube realized it made a crucial mistake in 2018, it seems as though the new video has not taken well with the majority of fans and was more of a top 10 compilation video, rather than a recap of the most liked Youtube videos of the year.
