Special Interest
Clubs At La Jolla High
September 24, 2019
There are many great clubs at La Jolla High School for all types of special interests. If students are looking for somewhere to hang out at lunch or something to do after school, joining a club can be a great option.
Locally Grown is a great club if interested in helping out the LJHS community by improving the health of fellow students. The club works on getting healthier food options into the cafeteria and around campus. President Ruaida Alkafaji expressed how important the club is to LJHS, “there aren’t that many good options at the cafeteria which forces students to eat junk food. The point of the club is to make healthy choices and bring healthier food options to LJHS.” The Locally Grown Club works on getting healthy options that aren’t unappealing to teens. The club is also rebuilding the garden by the 500 building, which is intended to help brighten up the school. If interested, they meet in room 304 on the first Thursday of every month.
Vikings for Vets is another club that encourages students to support and show appreciation for local veterans and service members. In the club is great students have the opportunity to interact with friends while raising money for those in need. Junior Tynan Walsh will be taking over the role as club president this year. Walsh says, “We do volunteering events, fundraisers, and collect items to deliver, all for the benefit of veterans. The past two years we have had a 5k run to raise money for Paralyzed Veterans and have served food at the Veterans Hospital.” Walsh expressed why he is so passionate about the organization saying,”Who better to support than those who courageously served for us in terrible times?” They are always looking for new members who can help out or participate in events. So if your interested, check out https://vikingsforvets.org/ for more details.
For those who have an interest in soccer or just want a place to hang out at lunch, The Champions League Club has them covered. The club is run by junior Kris Backlund , who enjoys watching soccer and wanted to create a club where he could share this passion with others. Backlund says, “The club is intended to gather and watch soccer games. It’s great because it kills off the stress of school life and you get to meet new people who enjoy the sport. I’m looking forward to the club gaining attendance and meeting new people!” The club meets in room 517 on Tuesdays or Wednesdays, so make sure to check out the Instagram account (ljhs_champions_league) for weekly updates.
Special interest clubs are something fun to do on free time and they are great for making new friends. Luckily, La Jolla High has lots to choose from for all sorts of activities.
