Coachella 2019

Coachella is one of the most anticipated music festivals of the year. The festival is known to many for having the biggest names in the music industry perform on their stage. Yearly, millions of people come to Coachella to watch a lot of amazing performances from artists all around the world. Beyonce, Eminem, and the Weeknd highlighted the event last year and shocked audiences with their performances.  This year, the events biggest performances were Childish Gambino, Tame Impala, and Ariana Grande. As said by Rolling Stone, “It was trippy, it was beautiful, it was hot — and it was another Coachella weekend in the books.”

One of the most talked-about performances was undoubtedly Ariana Grande. Her latest Album, Thank U, Next sold over a million copies. Her song Thank U, Next, 7 Rings, and Break up with your Girlfriend, I’m Bored became some of the biggest songs in 2018. Coincidentally, she played her hit songs but she also had many guest stars. During the middle of the performance, Ariana brought NSYNC’s Lance Bass, Chris Kirkpatrick, and Joey Fatone on stage. The trio performed a medley of NSYNC songs which delivered a whole lot of 90’s nostalgia. After NSYNC, Ariana brought rappers Diddy and Mase to pay tribute to late rapper Notorious B.I.G.Towards the end, Ariana brought fellow collaborator Nicki Minaj to perform their hit song Bang Bang. Despite some technical difficulties, there is no doubt that Ariana Grande amazed audiences at Coachella.

Another performance for the books was Childish Gambino. Childish Gambino is the musical alter ego of actor and creator Donald Glover. Gambino’s hit song This is America was praised by critics  and the music video caught the eyes of many for its dark message about modern America. Before he stepped on stage, his highly anticipated film “Guava Island” was revealed which starred Rihanna. After performing some of his hit songs, he took time to talk about death while reflecting on late rappers Nipsey Hussle and Mac Miller.  But not ever critic thinks that Glover should stay on the same Patheon of other rappers. As said in The Los Angeles Times, “It’s not that Glover can’t rap. And it’s not that he can’t sing. But neither his rapping nor his singing are exceptional; they get the job done in songs that can themselves be rather workmanlike — sturdy and well arranged, but with little of the invention that defines the stuff he loves by Drake and Kanye West and Parliament-Funkadelic.”

The last highlight performance from Coachella was none other than Tame Impala. Even though the band has a lower-profile than the artists previously mentioned, Tame Impala kept the stage upbeat and fun. The Australian band is known for their unique take on the alternative genre. Even though they performed the same setlist as their last Coachella performance, they kept fans happy with their energy and upbeat music. As said from Consequenceofsound.com, “In that respect, Tame Impala did more than enough to fill that void by drenching the crowd with their LSD-drenched visuals and even a little more crowd work than usual.”

Other memorable performers include Kacey Musgraves, Billie Eilish, BlackPink, Jaden Smith, and many other great performers. Even though many of the performers dealt with technical difficulties, they still delivered a great performance. Overall, the 2019 edition to Coachella is definitely one for the books.
