The Williams F1 team has decided to replace the American driver, Logan Sargeant, with the Formula 2 driver Franco Colapinto for the end of the 2024 season, starting from the Italian Grand Prix.
Sargeant’s status as the 20th F1 driver for this season was affecting the already shaky performance of his teammate, Alex Albon, 17th in the world ranking for the 2024 season. Above all, the fragility of Sargeant became too obvious after his huge crash during the Dutch Grand Prix on the 25th of August. For a growing Williams team that had just signed a multi-year contract with the Formula 1 driver Carlos Sainz, it was unreasonable for him to continue driving. Colapinto’s results at the Monza Grand Prix were encouraging: although he didn’t receive any points, the Argentinian obtained the 12th place, which, for a first Formula 1 Grand Prix, was a great victory over Sargeant’s usual results. However, James Vowles, team principal of Williams, said that “This is undoubtedly incredibly tough on Logan, who has given his all throughout his time with Williams, and we want to thank him for all his hard work and positive attitude.” In their press release, the team wished him a good continuation in his career by saying that he “will remain in the Williams family and [they] will support him to continue his racing career.”
