Met Gala 2021

The Met Gala is when all celebrities and designers come together and follow that year’s theme attire. It is meant to celebrate and fundraise for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s  costume institute. It is the event of the season.

This year’s Met Gala will definitely be one to remember. The theme listed on the invitations is “American Independence.” This year has been one of the most challenging there has been in a long time and because of that, the hosts of the met gala, Timothee Chalamet, Billie Eilish, Naomi Osaka, and Amanda Gorman, want to bring back our sense of freedom, community, and ultimately, our lives back.

Since this was such a hard year to encounter, the people want to bring back reality and try to get back into the same routine. Junior Lulu Hirschfield states, “I think this year’s Met Gala will definitely show how much we can all come together as a nation even through such hard times.” Vogue Magazine says, “Americana is just a small part of American fashion. Guests could go vintage with any number of goddess gowns from Halston, a color-block Stephen Burrows jersey dress, or a wisp of a slip dress from early Calvin Klein. It would be just as appropriate to support young American designers. Take a cue from our White House and think Christopher John Rogers, Jonathan Cohen, and Markarian. And someone should certainly pay homage to Prabal Gurung’s spring 2020 show and accessorize with a beauty queen sash that reads, “Who gets to be an American?”

For the past Met Galas, guests have dressed up to the nines in the most exquisite gowns and outfits and since last year’s Met Gala was cancelled, this year they want to go all out. Celebrities describe how much people have gone out for the past years and this year they want to be as extravagant as possible. Junior Chloe Nascimbeni said, “I feel like everyone is going to go out in their own way of expressing how they feel about American independence and introducing how diverse we are yet how close of a nation we are all together.”
