Joaquin Phoenix Calls out Hollywood for Lack of Diversity

Recently, actor Joaquin Phoenix called out Hollywood for their “lack of racial diversity” at the 73rd British Academy Film Awards. According to Fox News, Joaquin Phoenix took the opportunity of standing in front of some of the most famed actors and actresses to describe his disappointment in the “systemic racism” of Hollywood and their award shows. Phoenix said, “I think that we send a very clear message to people of color that you’re not welcome here. I think that’s the message that we’re sending to people that have contributed so much to our medium and our industry and in ways that we benefit from.” He went on to say how he is not innocent in this problem either, “This is not a self righteous condemnation, because I’m ashamed that I’m part of the problem.”

While some were left baffled from the speech, others reacted with praise, like actress Viola Davis, who said, “Thank you Joaquin Phoenix. For your honesty, solidarity, and courage.” Thoughts from La Jolla High students ring a similar tone to the praise of others. Senior Enbe Juthberg said, “It was good that he took the opportunity where a lot of people were listening, and I felt like he was really sincere, and because he’s white I people will probably listen more.”

Whether Phoenix’s speech will make a noticeable impact on Hollywood is yet to be seen, but he left us with these words, “I think it’s the obligation of the people that have created and perpetuate and benefit from a system of oppression to be the ones that dismantle it. So that’s on us.”
