La Jolla High has plenty of high-performing sports teams, and the Girls’ Varsity Water Polo team is one of them. So far they are undefeated, boasting an 8-0 record that they hope to maintain. “Our biggest competition is Bishop’s,” said Sophomore Lulu Hirschfield. “We can beat Cathedral, we can beat Coronado. Other than [Bishop’s] we have a good chance of winning all our games.”

The Varsity captains are Senior Shauna Franke, who has been on the team for three years, and Senior Jessica Newell, who has been on the team for four. Their team has shown growth already and gone from winning their first two games in November 1-0 to prevailing 15-6 against Vista High School the Friday before Winter Break. Hirschfield agreed, “There’s been a lot of improvement since the start of the season.”

The Junior Varsity Girls’ Water Polo team has also done extremely well this season, with a 5-2 record. The captains of the JV team are Sophomores Leah Hoeppner and Lucy Roxworthy. Freshman Audrey DeMerchant talked about being on the team and said, “It’s a lot of work, but it’s exhilarating.”
